Hello, “Ber” Months: Fall, Fun, & Upcoming Holiday Stress

There’s something about September that just feels different.
The weather starts to cool down, routines start getting back to normal, football is on, pumpkin everything starts showing up, and suddenly we realize we’re entering the “ber” months. September, October, November, and December.
For a lot of us, this is such a fun time of year. We get the cozy sweaters, fall decorations, Halloween, Thanksgiving, holiday parties, family traditions, and all the little things that make this season special.
But along with all the fun can come a whole lot of stress.
The “Ber” Months Can Be a Lot
The last few months of the year tend to bring more plans, more responsibilities, and sometimes a lot of expectations.
You might find yourself:
Trying to keep up with a busy schedule
Spending more money than you planned
Traveling or hosting family
Navigating difficult family relationships
Feeling pressure to make everything feel special
Balancing work, school, kids, and holiday activities
Experiencing grief or loneliness during a time of year that is often portrayed as happy
Feeling like you need to say yes to everything
And sometimes, even the things we love can become overwhelming when there are just too many of them happening at once.
Your Brain Doesn’t Know It’s Supposed to Be Cozy
Positive experiences can still be stressful.
Changes in routine, packed schedules, social events, financial concerns, and extra responsibilities can all impact our stress levels. If you already feel overwhelmed, adding more activities and expectations to your plate can make it harder to slow down and actually enjoy the things you were looking forward to.
That doesn’t mean you have to skip the fun. It just means it can be helpful to be intentional about how much you take on.
You Don’t Have to Do It All
You are allowed to enjoy the season without doing everything.
You don’t have to attend every gathering. You don’t have to buy the perfect gifts. You don’t have to host every holiday. You don’t have to keep every tradition exactly the same.
It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to simplify.
It’s okay to create new traditions that work better for you and your family.
And it’s okay if this season looks different than it has in the past.
Make Room for the Season You’re Actually Having
For some people, the “ber” months bring excitement and happy memories. For others, they can bring grief, difficult family dynamics, financial stress, or loneliness. And for many people, it’s a combination of all those things.
Whatever this season looks like for you, try to give yourself some room to experience it without putting pressure on yourself to make it perfect.
So, bring on the pumpkin spice, cozy mornings, football, holiday traditions, and all the fun that comes with fall. Just remember that taking care of yourself is part of the season, too.
